Halloween Wedding

Mallory's favorite holiday is Halloween. I was really excited when I discussed her bridal portraits and she wanted to shoot at the cemetery. How fun! We may even get to do a "trash the dress" session at some point.
Mallory and Jevon at so in-love and that joy is contagious. It's hard to be around them and not see the bond between them. Isn't love grand?
Mallory really wanted to do a Tim Burton themed reception, but compromised with a fall theme. But we did get that bridal session in at the cemetery. I'm posting a couple of the images here and the rest can be seen in her Client Gallery on my website.
The actually wedding day was beautiful! I love this fall weather. Mallory is so beautiful is was a joy to shoot every shot of this special day! Her mom is a friend of mine and it was great spending time with their family during this important moment of their lives. I'm honored to have been chosen to capture their moments.
I'll admit to being a bit jealous of their honeymoon trip to Greece with a layover in ROME!!! But I'll get over it (one day).

A Mother's Love

Cheryl is the mother of four! Harrison is her baby (check out that red hair and those curls). Her husband is ready for those curls to go, but you know us moms...we have a hard time with our babies growing up. Cheryl wanted some special images with the baby before the haircut. Emily & A.J. Tie the Knot

After having her bridal session rained out twice and the threat of rain on the wedding day, I am happy to say that Emily and A.J.'s wedding went off without MUCH of a hitch (Melanie, wedding planner/coordinator, florist and caterer had a bit of a fender-bender, but everyone was okay).
The day started at the Church of God in Athens and if you aren't in the south you'll be surprised to learn that there was a heat index of 105!!! Can you say hot and humid? Thankfully, it was an indoor ceremony.
Emily and A.J. had their "first look" and a moment of privacy and then the day of shooting and celebrating was off and running.
Bob Watson performed a beautiful ceremony and then ended by adding "wait for it, wait for it" before allowing the kiss. Of course, Emily is falling back in laughter. She's got such a cute laugh (Pics in client gallery on website.)
From the church we traveled to the Donnell house for the reception. (This is when Melanie had her bit of trouble.) We aren't sure, but this place COULD be haunted. There were a lot of flickering lights and some paintings of some serious people on the walls of this place! But Melanie and her "team" had done an amazing job setting up the great food buffet and Christie's cakes were once again the stars of the food lines. The groom's cake was an Alabama cake (Roll Tide!) and looked awesome.
I was warned by their "group" of close friends to be ready with the camera as they were leaving, so I waited to see what was up. Once Emily was safe in the truck, A.J. was attacked with super-soaker water guns. I'm guessing his tux doesn't get the respect her dress does! He was drenched (again, pics in their client gallery). I wish them ALL THE BEST in their new lives as Mr. and Mrs. Macomber!

May - the New June?

I know when I got married 23 years ago, June was THE month to get married. It was considered special to be a "June bride." Now, it seems, that May is the new June. The last few years I've booked May full and only had a couple June weddings. Not sure when things changed, why or how, but times "they are a changing." Here are a couple of images from my May brides.

This weekend my own daughter is getting married. Watch for her images soon (not take by me, but a Moma's gotta brag a little).

Fun at the Park

Being the mother of three girls, I'll admit to loving giggly girls. I love the sound of a little girl's laughter and the silliness that usually invokes it. The Maxson girls are no exception to the norm of giggly little girls. I met the family after worship Sunday evening to take some pictures of the girls. The roses at the park are beautiful and their mother really wanted pictures there with the girls wearing their Easter dresses. We also hoped to get some in play outfits on the huge rocks at the park, but they were blocked off due to landscaping work that is in progress. The girls brought their new puppy Sam and we attempted pictures with him, you can see how well that went. Between the puppy running away and the girls getting tickled with one another, it was a very entertaining session!

Growing Up

Ryan is the firstborn son of one of my past wedding couples. I shot his newborn pics and was excited when they wanted me to shoot his 6 month pics as well. Doesn't he have the most beautiful blue eyes? Not having a studio space makes it a bit tough, so I set up a backdrop in my kitchen by the large window, a barnwood rug in my foyer by the front door and then shot some on my bed. I used natural light for all of these. I love his precious smile and those blue eyes!

Due Any Time Now???

Karla emailed me to set up a time to do her maternity pictures. She was worried that she'd have the baby before getting the pictures made (so she had the back-up plan of an impomptu session at the hospital, if necessary). Thankfully, she made it in plenty of time. From the looks of her, you'd think she still had months before the baby is due. I was this size at 6 months!
She brought her daugher and son so we could do images for a collage to match others she's had done in the past. Micah would much rather ride the tricycle that have his picture made, so we had a few moments break now and again with him riding around us on the trike. The bribe of candy worked really well with him! I sent them home with chocolate in their tummies and Peeps in their hands! Karla is going to love me for the sugar high they were having on the ride home! Watch the blog for pics of the newborn in the next few weeks.

Springtime Ballerina

What little girl hasn't wanted at one time or another to be a ballerina? I think it crossed my mind a time or two, I seem to recall walking on my toes on occasion. For me, the true goal was to be a cowgirl or a world class gymnast, so I walked on my hands as much as I walked on my toes. But today I spent some time with Hannah who has been able to follow her dream to become a dancer. She has these cool shoes that make it SO MUCH EASIER to stand on your toes. Why didn't I have those? I spent some time with Hannah in my make-shift garage studio and then we went out to do some pictures in the great outdoors (hey, it's finally spring-like here!!!) Here are a few images from our session.

Decisions, Decisions, Decsions - The Cake

Throughout my years shooting weddings I've seen some very beautiful and very creative cakes. Personally, I can't imagine having to narrow down the choices. Thankfully, my mom's cousin made my cake and it was amazing and delicious.
But can you imagine... the tasting and having to pick just a few layer choices?
Or the design when today's cake artists can do such AMAZING cakes (Have you seen
Ace of Cakes or Cake Boss, I mean, really?!?)
I've seen some great theme cakes (Darth Vader, Alabama and Auburn, even a hideous Tennessee cake, drums, and all edible!). I'm posting a few images of some of the creative cakes that I've seen. Check out the Alabama hats, both are cake! How cool is that. The drum is cake as well! Enjoy...

I have step-sisters! How odd...

My mom's wedding was today. I'm exhausted.
It's hard to be the daughter who is helping
get everything ready and the photographer who
is trying to document the day.
Did I say I'm exhausted? We had a LOT of
amazing people help out with this event.
My dear, sweet friend Tammie did all the
beautiful flowers, Moma's cousin Sue and her
friends Elizabeth and Linda took care of food
and decorating, etc.

What started out as a small ceremony for immediate family with cake, nuts and mints became a nice event with close friends and family and Sue took charge with food and she and Elizabeth created a feast. All were fed WELL and we all took home a LOT of leftovers. I may not have to cook for days!

My brother Phillip walked mother in and along the way she handed out roses to her family members. Now, those who know me are aware that I cry at Hallmark commercials, well, as you will see from the pics, it isn't just me! The entire place, including the singers was choking back the tears. My mom's younger brother is a DUDE (motorcycles, leather chaps, the works) and even HE was tearring up. I love the Nikon has such a great autofocus system!

So, as the day ends I have a step-father, step sisters, and a much larger and very special new family.

Winter Blues Got Ya Down?

Are you as ready for summer as I am? I do love winter - cuddling under blankets, fire in the fire pit, wearing my sweaters, and the spring that follows. Admit it, we wouldn't appreciate spring nearly as much if winter didn't preceed it!

I thought it would be nice dearing these dreary, winter days to spread a little sunshine through laughter. So, I'm sharing some images that I hope will bring a smile to your face and some warmth into your heart!

My Mom's Getting Married - Yikes!

My father passed away almost 5 years ago. This last year my mom met Bobby. He's a great guy, really sweet, and they have a blast together. I'm so thankful the Lord has brought them together. Just before Christmas Bobby gave Moma a rock (I say rock because it is a hunk of shiny stone) and they are getting married at the end of January. Yup, we are moving a bit quicker here in the south this month. Thankfully, she has lot of help to pull this off.
I took them out today to do some pics because I want to do a guest sign-in book with pics of the two of them. Here's a bit of insight into how that session went:
Moma: I want you to make me look like Marilyn Monroe, and DON'T put these on Facebook
Me: Moma stop laughing and look at the camera and I'm going to put them on Facebook
Moma: I don't want to have wrinkles or a double chin
Me: I know, Moma, I know
Moma: Can you photoshop my hair brown, I'm thinking about a new color
Me: Sure, Moma I can do that, want a pink stripe, too?
Me: Moma, stop laughing and look at the camera - Bobby, look at the camera
Moma: Do NOT put these on Facebook, I am your mother!

Ever just have one of those days, you know the ones, where it seems others just don't take you seriously? That's what this cute pic of Lottie makes me think of. All day long this is the look I got when she made eye contact with me. How can you not love a face like this? I loved this capture so I converted it to BW and added grain, because I love me some BW images! Fortunately, I did grab a couple of images where she isn't making eye contact and giving me this incredibly cute look, they can be seen in their Client Gallery on my website.

The upcoming issue of Southern Family Magazine will feature images from a wedding I shot last year at the beautiful Gillespie Gardens in Moulton, Alabama. The wedding of Erin and Matthew was absolutely beautiful and I was so excited to learn that those images would be featured with their wedding article along with an image on the cover of the magazine. This is a free publication available in north/central Alabama, so I realize I've not hit the "bigtimes" yet, but for me - this is pretty cool!

In Mommy's Heart

Sometimes you meet someone that touches your heart. This is what I experienced on Sunday's shoot with the Bevil family (well, the girls, her son was sick so Dad stayed home with him). Aaliyah was adopted at 8 weeks old having the misfortune of being born to a crack addict. The Bevil family have taken this sweet girl into their homes and their hearts. She is such a cutie, very curious and so sweet. I enjoyed my time with these ladies and hope that I did them justice in the images.

Getting those Holiday Pictures

I brought my camera to my grandmother's house for Thanksgiving so I could take a holiday picture for my sister's family. She wanted pics of the boys in Santa hats - an idea they weren't too thrilled about. I had them stand back-to-back and asked them to look tough, like a gangsta. They were totally unable to keep a straight face. My teasing wasn't much help! Here's one of my favorites of the boys.

Shooting for Myself

I've read often where other photographers suggest that you take the time to shoot for yourself from time to time. In doing so, you work on skills, creativing, or simply learn to love the craft all over again. Normally, I just don't make the time to shoot for myself since I shoot for others so often. However, this past weekend my family was gone and I asked a friend to spend the weekend with me and practice shooting in varied lighting situations. She brought one of her daughters (who is a great model and up for anything). We spent several hours Friday and Saturday shooting in full sun, open shade, backlit and with off camera flash. Then I played with the images in Photoshop. I don't use textures often, but wanted to apply some here. (Hey, these are just for fun, right?) Here are a few from the day.

Second Shooting

I worked Saturday as a second shooter for Paula Van Hal of Tampa, FL. I love the freedom of second shooting. I find it much less stressful that having to worry about getting every "must have" picture of the day. It's also a great way to learn from other photographers and see how others get it done. Katie was referred to me by a former bride. She has the biggest brown eyes, so I knew she's photograph beautifully. Being Blessed

Occasionally you meet a person or a family that is so special, you feel blessed to know them. That is how I feel about the Douthit family. This family has such a heart for God and a love for each other, it inspires me to be a better person just by being around them. I spent the day Saturday shooting the wedding of Tim Douthit, the oldest of the Douthit boys. Tim and Joyce are so in love and are so blessed to have found one another. I know they will do great things for the Lord and on this earth.
I've been working on my lighting skills and used some of my new knowledge during these shots. I've used off camera flash for some of these and the sun as backlighting for the others.
I'm hoping to perfect these skills and grow from here. Thanks for looking. All comments are appreciated.

Babies at Camp

I threw together a "make-shift" studio in a back room at camp and took pics of a couple of newborns. These babies are the first born of two of the camp's past campers and now counselors. They were so cute it was hard to put them down to take their pictures, but I made it work for me (at least as best I could).

Tim & Joyce Engagement Session

Tim and Joyce came into town from Birmingham this weekend and spent this evening with me shooting a few images for their engagement session. The park was really crowded ("movies in the park" was tonight), so we had to do a lot of closeups. But we did manage to get a few in with some scenery. I'm looking forward to their August wedding!

Digital Painting

I downloaded a free trial of software that enables digital painting as a plugin to Photoshop. I played with a few of the options today and think it is pretty cool stuff. I'm wondering if there is a market for this type of art in my world. I'd love to hear what you think.

Summertime is Camp Time

Each summer my girls and I spend a week on and a week off at the Rustic Youth Camp in Russellville, AL. The camp is a great time of Bible study, crafts, sports, and general camp pranks. I love that my girls are able to attend this camp and be with their friends from all over the states. The girls count down the days throughout the year until the next camp. Here are a few random photos from the week.

Sunset Wedding

Stefanie and Jason lucked out with great weather for the May 30th wedding at Burritt on the Mountain. We had rain for weeks off and on before the 30th, but the morning of the wedding day greeted us with sunshine and the day concluded with an amazing sunset. The bride's mother-in-law did all the flowers for the ceremony and they were beautiful. I was very impressed! Despite the rain Casey and Jenna had a beautiful ceremony this evening at Annabella at Cedar Glen. What a beautiful location. I wish we could have taken advantage of it. I was asked to travel to Oxford, MS, to shoot the wedding of Leah and Brian. Being "directionally challenged" the trip was a bit intimidating, but I actually made it there and back without getting lost! Jessica even drove part of the way!

I have been so excited to shoot Lottie's pictures wearing this cute flower hat I made and in this tulip basket I found. Unfortunately, Lottie doesn't seem to like hats, so this was the ONLY decent shot I got with it. The white smocked dress is one I made for my youngest (almost 15 now).

Jessica's 151 team competed this past weekend in the 16s tournament at Franklin, TN's new AGame facility (this place is amazing - 12 courts, 2 hockey rinks, laser tag, party rooms, etc.) They placed first after a long day of play. They really came together as a team and worked hard to win this one - taking the final match to the third game and winning 15-13. This is a series that shows their ACE cheer.

Club Volleyball

My youngest plays club volleyball, which means we will be traveling a lot of weekends over the next couple of months. Thankfully this comes during a downtime for weddings and I don't have any overlap! YEA! This past weekend we were in Franklin, TN at the new AGame Sports Complex for the IMPACT tournament. Played with my sisters' families at my grandmother's. I did these in both color (muted and textured) and sepia (shown). I printed them on matboard with a linen finish and think they turned out pretty well.

New Software

I've recently upgraded to Photoshop CS4 and Corel Painter X. WOW, amazing differences from what I've been using (Elements and Painter 3). I've been playing a bit with the Painter and I really think it will add a whole new world to what I can offer. Here is my first attemt. Let me know what you think!

I spent the better part of this week at a fantastic photography seminar for the members of the NoBS Photosuccess forum. Four great days in Nashville with some cool people from all over the states and Canada. Needless to say, I'm exhausted.

The girls and I have been to one camp already the summer and will be going again next week. I can't believe how fast the first week of camp passed. This week I took a quick trip to Auburn with my oldest daughter so that she could get her Tiger Card and order football tickets. I made a quick stop at a friend's house and took just a few pictures of her new baby. He is such a cutie!

I was a last minute fill-in for Nicole and Mark's wedding. The ceremony was under cover, but open to the raging storm that took place during the ceremony (and cleared up within 30 minutes after the ceremony). This is one of my favorite images from the day. I was second shooter at the wedding of friends this past weekend. Being second shooter allowed me to "play" a little more since I didn't have the stress of being the primary shooter. So, I took the opportunity to play with the Nikon CLS system. This is one of my favorites from the day. Use the Blue Vanilla action and the added a bit more blue.

Graduation Practice

Today was Kacey's senior class graduation practice. They practice early so they can get pictures for the yearbook. Naturally, I had to go and take some pictures for my scrapbook. They had a great time and I have some great pictures for my scrapbook. This event is going to be even more special because Kacey will be graduating on a stage built by my father before his passing. How cool is that?

I spent an hour today with Jessica and Adam shooting their engagement pictures. We went to Bridge Street and made good use of the new features we have available to us here in Huntsville.

Christmas is Here!

I'm blessed in that all my brothers and sisters live nearby and we are easily able to spend holidays together. We had Christmas dinner tonight at my grandmother's house. All my aunts, uncles, cousins. Needless to say, the place was PACKED. But it is great to see everyone and catch-up on what is going on. I grabbed this quick image of my nephew as he tried on the new protective glasses that go with his Nerf gun. Isn't he a cutie!

I'm SO close to having all my shopping done - YEA! I have to get just a few more items and then I can relax - well, except for the cooking, etc.

We will be spending Christmas Eve at my grandmother's house. I'm blessed in that I still have both my grandmothers and one of my great-grandmothers. As long as I can remember we have had Christmas Eve at my dad's mom's house. It is a great memory and I hope it means as much to my girls as it always has to me. It is sad without my dad there, but he is truly in a better place and waiting for us to join him.

Christmas day we will have Christmas lunch at my sister's house. You should see the incredible amount of gifts under that tree (VERY big family). My girls and their cousins love to get together. This is such fun for them - especially opening gifts!

I pray that the Lord watches over us all during the holiday season that that everyone has a very Merry Christmas.

I was blessed to be able to attend a workshop with David Beckstead this week. He taught how to bring fashion style into your bridal portraits (and I'm thinking it will be great for seniors also). I had such a great time shooting all day in GREAT locations (Sloss Furnace and the Alabama Theater). I met a lot of great photographers and got some great images. Here are a few.

I ordered this tutu about 4 months ago. I had about decided it would never arrive. So, naturally, when it came in I had to call a friend with a willing/appropriately sized daughter so I could play. Everyone that knows me knows that I love sports. I get to shoot softball, baseball and volleyball a lot. But today I was able to shoot a highschool football game. I was able to walk the sideline and get some good angles. Here is one I loved of our team punting the ball away. I used my new 70-200 2.8 AFS VR lens. With the bright sun I didn't need the VR, but the lens is SWEET!

Lord willing, I'll get to shoot some soccer next month. That should be fun!

Letting Go

There are some things in life that are so exciting, and so sad. Currently, I'm dealing with a senior in high school and the hectic schedule that goes along with that. She is researching colleges and working on getting scholarships so she can afford to go away. We went to Auburn today for War Eagle Day. The campus is beautiful and she loved it. Lord willing, she'll spend Saturday at Alabama with her father (Alabama is providing tickets to the game!!!)

I had shot a wedding on the way to Auburn (stopped over for a few days in B'ham) so my camera and tripod were in the car. Took advantage and got some cute shots of Kacey at the Auburn sign and made a blend of the images.

Keep us in your prayers that Kacey will choose wisely.

Aging Myself

Kacey finally got her braces off and we were able to take her first series of senior portraits. From what she has asked for, I'm thinking this will be the YEAR of "Photos in the Life of Kacey." She wants casuals taken EVERYWHERE. Anytime I take a couple or a bride for pictures, she wants her taken there as well. So, I might be busy with this one for a while.

This is my pick for the yearbook. But who knows which one she will choose. Once she picks her favorites, I'll upload them to the senior gallery on my site.

I've just added digital albums (similar to Zookbooks) to my client offerings. These are a HUGE hit. These books are great for weddings and seniors, or a REALLY NICE bragbook for grandma. I'm really excited that I've found a lab that does such a fantastic job on these books.
